What's For Breakfast?

As a busy parent I like to get up a little bit earlier to have a cup of coffee before the kids get us. This morning I made some delicious freshly ground coffee I purchased from Aldi. It's called Organic Peru so delicious!

I knew I needed to make breakfast rather quickly and I have the perfect recipe! Am I the only one who always thought oatmeal was difficult to make? I was under the assumption you needed to soak the oats first and it was some long process. Oh no! I have a 10 min oatmeal recipe! I can't take credit for this one but Beach Body has a good one here it is
  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • ¼ tsp. sea salt (or pink Himalayan)
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

Instructions

  1. Bring almond milk and salt to a boil in medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently.
  2. Add oats; cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, for 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. Let oatmeal stand for 1 minute before serving.

I used the salt Tuesday morning when I made this and it wasn't bad but I'm not a fan of salt so I wasn't excited about it. Today when I made this I left the salt out and it was so much better. I guess it just depends if you like salt or not. Here is our oatmeal this morning
So delicious! Do any of you have a different oatmeal recipe you'd like to share? If so leave them in the comments and I'll try them out!

Have a great day!

What are the plans for our homestead?

This is something that I personally have thought long and hard about. Both of our children will be going to school this year so I will have some free time. I have talked this over with my husband and we agree that living a self sustainable life is the best way for us to live. It won't happen over night but there are some things we can do right away after moving in like gardening. Even in the winter you can grow plants some inside or in a greenhouse.

A few weeks before spring hits we will be calling our local farms to see who would be willing to sell hay to us. I plan to mulch the gardens with hay and after the growing season we will throw it in the compost. Speaking of compost.. That needs to be built(using pallets for fairly easy) before summer starts. This is probably also when we will start looking into purchasing our chicken coop and our chicks. For the chicken coop I am undecided if I want to use electric poultry netting around the coop and run or if I want to use concrete pavers for the run area. That way it's predator proof and we don't have to worry about animals digging their way into the chicken area.

We need to price materials for a garage, shed, and fence. We are fencing in our backyard for a safe place for our children and dog. Eventually we will be adding to our fur baby family we currently have a 2 yr old Pit Bull Terrier mix. He is such a joy! We adopted him from a local shelter but he has been a little sad so we want to get him a friend. Our pets will be trained to be chicken friendly so no worries!

At some point we will be installing a rain water system to use for watering plants and an outdoor shower/rinse. Since we plan on planting blueberry bushes the rain water will come in handy! We will also be talking about starting a youtube channel. I would like to so we can document our journey but I'm still uncertain. This is all a lot to think about and nothing is set in stone yet. I hope we can get everything moving along and take you on this journey with us!

Chicken and Chicken Coop Talk

If you read our Welcome blog you know we will soon be moving to our starting homestead. We plan to get chickens but what kind? At first we wanted to get just meat birds and fill our freezer. While I was reading up on our county/township codes and for owning chickens in our area I found out we can only own 6. Also our county says our chickens can not be free range they must be in a fenced in area with a top cover so other birds and animals can't kill our chickens. While this saddens me greatly we do not have the funds to fence in our entire front yard with top covering for chickens.

Lets talk coops.. The plan is to have our chickens clear our garden areas so something mobile is a must. I was thinking something like this

Find your new chicken coops at Wayfair. Enjoy Free Shipping & browse our great selection of chicken coops, tractors, runs, and chicken coop accessories.

Does anyone have anything like this? If you do PLEASE comment below I have some questions!

Our long term plan is dual purpose chickens but what kind? If anyone has any input or think maybe we should change out a few with something else let me know! I'm open to any suggestions as this is very new to us.
Here are the top contenders we have chose:

Plymouth Rock
Image result for PLYMOUTH ROCK (BARRED ROCK)

Brahma

Australorp

And of course our girls want a....
Silkie Bantam

😂😂😂 a Silkie would definitely bring us some joy every day!

Those are the ones we are considering more than likely we would purchase 2 Australorp, 2 Plymouth Rock, 1 Brahma, and 1 Silkie. For all my chicken people out there reading do you normally purchase a day old chick that has the Marek's Vaccination? I follow a few blogs and youtubers who say they do and some who don't. Any help is appreciated!

Have a blessed day!

I have been on what must be hundreds of websites looking for Non-GMO seeds to start our garden next year. Next year?!??! yes.. I am a planner and I like a strict budget to save money. I finally found a company that I believe in to buy my seeds from.

Seedsnow.com is a company who sells Non-GMO seeds who does NOT believe in buying from or growing any seeds from large corporations that make genetically engineered seeds. They are full supporters of the Safe Seed Pledge and their seeds are 100% open pollinated. And.... They're affordable!!!

You can get 10% off your first order(see details below), get a FREE gift with any order over $10, AND get FREE shipping on order $20 or more! So many perks with this company!

Welcome!!

Hello and Welcome to our blog! I am Tracy a wife and stay at home mother. We wanted to start this blog to document our journey through homesteading. Currently we are living in a house in the city and paying way too much to live. Soon we will be moving to where we will create out homestead on 1.5 acres and starting our journey!

1.5 acres doesn't sound like a lot but you can do a lot with that amount of land. Our plans are to have a large garden and chickens for now. I don't know about you but I am sick of paying $400+ on groceries when we can grow it ourselves. Our goal is to to a self sustainable as possible without being off grid. This will mean supporting our local farmers and buying meat from them, canning food, rain water collection system, growing what we can with the resources we have, and just simply being happy!

I am an affiliate for seedsnow.com so you will see a lot of blogs on their flash sales, daily deals, and so on. I will have a lot of future recipe and cooking blogs :)

This is all fairly new to us and something we have never done before so stick with us! There will be giveaways and other goodies!

Have a blessed day!
